African Dive Adventures has pioneered Protea Banks, a world renowned shark-diving reef on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, offering scuba divers an unforgettable experience.
African Dive Adventures offers:
- Shark Diving on Protea Banks with different shark species during different times of the year
- Baited Shark Diving with Tiger sharks and Bull sharks. Tiger sharks mainly between March and May; Bull Sharks almost all year round
- Sardine Run Diving in Coffee Bay from mid June to end July
South Africa is one of only a few countries in the world offering shark diving. Using a baiting technique that closely resembles the Tiger and Bull shark's natural feeding habit, small groups of well qualified divers can experience the thrill of a drift dive with wild sharks in their natural environment without the use of any protection at all. These dives blow every photographer's and shark-friend's mind. The divers get within meters and sometimes centimeters of the sharks.
The annual great Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon which usually occurs between the months of May and July, when massive schools of sardines spawn in the cool waters around the Cape and move northward along the east coast of South Africa. Their sheer numbers create a feeding frenzy along the coastline; an incredible spectacle which before only the locals used to get drawn into. There are hundreds, sometimes thousands of common dolphins along the coast hunting the sardines and there are whales everywhere. Sardines group together when they are threatened to form what is called a bait ball. This instinctual behavior is a defense mechanism, as lone individuals are more likely to be eaten than large groups. Once the bait ball is formed, the sharks and dolphins swim through and through and other fish and birds take advantage of the opportunity until not one sardine is left. This, for obvious reasons, is the ideal time to get into the waters and behold Mother Nature at work.
African Dive Adventures offers Sardine Run Packages along the Wild Coast. The base is set up at Coffee Bay where divers are accommodated in the lovely Ocean View Hotel. It is the best Coffee Bay has to offer and is the place to be after a hard day's 'work'. Standard packages are 6 nights and 5 activity days at sea. For groups tailor made, longer packages are available. These are full days at sea returning to base no later than 16h00 and sandwiches and drinks are provided on the boat.
